Tell
us a little about yourself...
With over 10 years experience behind the decks, Mike Blades has played many types of gigs from rocking club parties to chilled out private shows, corporate functions and massive events such as official resident DJ for “Evolution”, a schoolies week dance party for Breakfree travel and has played alongside some of Australia’s finest DJ talent, including: Peewee Ferris, Nik Fish, Yoshi, Mark Dynamix, Andy Van, Rob KAY, BeXta, Jumpin Jack, Captain Kirk, Amber Savage, the Stafford Brothers and many more.
Starting out behind the decks in 1997, Mike perfected his skills on reading a crowd, MC work and general party mayhem and applied diversity to style and track selection to ensure the floor was always jumping. He developed and continued to bring a “party anywhere” attitude to gigs. A desire to spread his wings saw Mike Blades leave the nation’s capital for the big city lights of Sydney in 1999 where he immediately gained an on-air presenter position at underground radio station 99.3 New-Wave FM for the “Weekend wake-up show”. Soon Mike Blades had regular gigs around town at venues like the Kings Cross hotel, One World sports, The Shark hotel, Rogues, Kinsellas and the Ettamogah. This eventually led to Mike doing live DJ sets for 96.9 Wild FM’s “morning mix show”.
Working for Absolute Infinity for the last 2 years has opened many doors for Mike Blades and he has had the opportunity to DJ at some of Sydney’s finest party venues along with some of the best party people in the harbor city. Mike Blades plays all styles of music from the party
favourites of the 70’s & 80’s to the freshest anthems today, and almost everything in between, and has a unique DJ/MC style that is uplifting, energetic and fresh, but with a familiar feel and vibe that gets the crowd dancing and cheering for more. And with a current residency at The Bristol Arms “Retro”, Mike puts on a show every Friday and Saturday for over 600 happy party people…and does it grinning ear to ear
What's your most embarrassing moment? Doing a weekend radio gig in Sydney and having
my mum call my mobile…and I forgot the “on air”
mic was active at the time….MANY other DJ’s and
people gave me shit about it for weeks…and asked
how “mummy” was (love ya mum!!!).
What are your most
memorable moments? I
love a gig when the crowd gets into it and are
screaming “One more song” 15 minutes after we
have shut. Two of the best gigs I ever did were:
DJ’ing the morning mix show on Wild FM in Sydney and being the resident DJ for schoolies week on
the gold coast….there is something awe inspire
ring having 5,000+ people come to party with you
and going totally mental when you drop a rocking
club track.
What do you do in your spare
time? Shop
for vinyl records (yes I have a habit). I love
going to the movies and hanging with friends
over coffee.
I’m also into video games and music
production (trying to write a number 1) yes yes
yes…I'm a big nerd.
Hates... People who are not open minded when they come to
gigs I’m at.
Open yourself up to experiencing new
styles of music and old classics…sure you may
only like a certain style…but that style evolved
from some other style and if you let me, I will
take you on a journey.
Any tracks you
dislike playing? I
will play anything that gets the crowd going,
but I really hate having to repeat songs. Please
don’t show up to the venue 20 mins before
closing and get annoyed that I wont play the
latest 10 tracks for you….I have been playing
them all night, so get here earlier!!!
Who inspires
you as a DJ? DJ
Tiesto – he is making DJ’ing glamorous again…
Current residencies? Friday - Crows
Nest Hotel Saturday - Level 2 Bristol Arms Retro Hotel - I
love my Saturday nights... such a great crowd.
