Carl Alley

For one of the most lauded people in the local music industry, DJ Carl Alley is determinedly humble. After countless years of performing at nightclubs,  major events, concert after-parties and underage gigs across Australia, submitting exclusive DJ reviews for Magazine & Web sites, his own long-running community radio show, “Flava In Ya Ear,” on 88.1 2RDJFM, and an affiliation with all major record labels as an accredited Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) DJ.

There’s no brash personality or overly confident manner – just a soft-spoken, unassuming DJ. There’s also no sign of the loud throwback jerseys and bright street gear preferred by most of his current DJ counterparts, with Alley’s style decidedly more relaxed. Above all, there’s never a reputation for being disruptive and difficult to work with, hence his consistently booked schedule with promoters across the country.

Often regarded as a benchmark for Sydney’s growing number of urban DJ’s and one of the most in demand on the Sydney scene, holding residencies at a number of Sydney’s hottest clubs as well as guest spots through out Australia.

The man, who has been a mainstay of Sydney’s clubs for over a decade, has established himself as one of Australia’s premier urban club DJ’s.

“I won’t ever claim to be better than the next DJ, just different,” he offers simply.

There is one place where Carl Alley transforms into a totally different character, and that is the DJ booth. The epitome of versatility, Alley’s sets are legendary for their irreverence to usual urban music fare, serving up a fusion of R&B, hip-hop, pop, dancehall, Latin, African, 2-step, garage, and anything with a touch of soul. While other DJs are left scratching their heads in amazement, Alley breaks new tracks, plays current hits, and throws tunes with a cultural spin into the mix simultaneously, never skipping a beat and managing to keep the crowd going wild. Also renown for his steadfast commitment to raising awareness of local artists’ talents (he is manager of rising Sydney group Breed), during his travels Alley has championed the careers of acts including Camielle, ILA Familia, Selwyn, and Jeremy Gregory to name a few.

Ultimately, it is Alley’s wealth of experience and knowledge keeping him ahead of the game.

“Australians lack a culture of hip-hop and R&B, and there’s a history with this music that cannot be ignored,” he asserts. “If the scene can appreciate this and they are educated with this, then you have a scene that grows with a love for the music instead of a passing fad.”

“The most important thing to me,” he finishes, “is establishing a strong foundation for this scene; something we in Australia can identify with.”
