1.
Why did you take up DJing? A love for music that couldn’t be suppressed by simply purchasing
CD’s from HMV, I felt drawn to playing the latest music to huge crowds.
I guess it was a huge ego thing.
2. What pieces of
vinyl do you hang on to for dear life? Stevie
Wonder – Innervisions LP
3. What music
styles are you into? Anything
that sounds good. Limiting yourself to one or two forms of music means
your missing out on a plethora of dope sounds.
4. What was the first
record you bought? Burt & Ernies Learn To Spell circa 81’.
5. Where was your first gig?
At
a house party in Bonnyrigg which is in the South-West of Sydney. Known for
its exotic location.
6.
How do you deal with a seated or hostile crowd? Never happened, but in my new book, DJing For The Disenfranchised, I write
that at any stage of a party where it seems things aren’t poppin’,
just throw on either Fatman Scoop – Be Faithful or DMX – Party Up.
Instant results.
7. What has been
your best DJing experience? Probably every Saturday at Jigsaw @ Martin Place Bar in Sydney, due to the
fact that I get to play what I want because the crowd is fairly up to date
with there music, plus they’re always more open to a good beat not
necessarily what’s being thrashed on the radio.
8. Which up and
coming DJs would you give props to and why? He’s not really up and coming cause he’s been in the game for a couple
of years, but I can’t go past my man DJ Solz. We usually do a lot of
work together and for some reason every time I follow him or vice versa, we
seem to get the most response from the crowd. Good track selection and a
knack for making the club crunkafied.
9. What do you look
for when record shopping? Tracks that
will work in a club format that I know other dudes will bite once I start
playing it. Copying is the sincerest form of flattery, thanks guys.
10. What do you think is missing in the Sydney
scene? More musical education. Radio and T.V. put like 20 RNB/Hip-Hop songs in
rotation over the course of a year and its not enough. Whatever clips get
thrashed on MTV or Channel V are the cuts that people request in the club
so let’s get more on there so people can feel a bit more than
“…it’s ya Birthday”.
11.
What are Sydney ’s strengths? It’s the New York of Australia. Even though we are still mad behind the
States and England when it comes to the
latest sh!t, we are crazy ahead of the rest of Australia
. It really is the
cultural melting pot of the Southern Hemisphere, which means you get a lot
of different people that all have in common that they live in the best
country in the world.
12. Where and when can we see you play? As long as George Bush doesn’t plan to ‘liberate’ the people of Australia
,
you can catch me weekly at Jigsaw @ Martin Place Bar every Saturday unless
I’m Interstate. I’m also Bi-Weekly at RNB SuperCLUB @ Quest on the
Gold Coast. Come check me out if your ever in the area and are looking to
dance the night away to some top notch sounds. |
