I AM SAM

What do the movie I Am Sam and the self confessed music geek I Am Sam have in common? Absolutely nothing! But you can bet, like the movie, this DJ, producer and remixer is heading towards the same legendary status.

There is no doubt that the electronic dance music scene’s eyes and ears firmly set on I Am Sam’s next move.

I Am Sam previously saw him attain some impressive feats. In the year 2010 alone, he managed to score a total of 5 ARIA Club chart entries for remixes and originals, including a #1 for his remix of Zoe Badwi – Freefalling as well as it featuring in the UK Club chart Top 20. He was asked to officially re-make the legendary ‘Down Under 2011’ by Men At Work which received commercial and club radio success as well as it being signed in 6 countries internationally. Add to that, a remix bag for Sarah McLeod, Pablo Calamari (Act Yo Age), P Money, Terri B, Dave Manna, Venuto, Ben Morris, to name a few, and its clear, that this spec wearing DJ is here for the long haul.

But, it’s in 2011 that I Am Sam has given the international house scene a bit of a shimmy and shake. First off was a feature in the official 2011 ITM DJ awards Top 50, then it was the his original masterpiece, I Am Sam – Touch The Sky featuring in the Australian Club Chart Top 50 and being supported by the likes of David Guetta (Radio), Paul Van Dyk, Kid Massive, Till West and the Billboard 100.

Hed Kandi Australia also noticed the rapid rise of this talented DJ and was quick to snatch I Am Sam up as their national resident DJ and headline act. The I Am Sam sound waves rippled across the globe, first with Ministry Of Sound Radio UK, jumping on board the wave and featuring him as a guest DJ on their Hed Kandi Show, then MTV UK producer head hunting I Am Sam to feature in an upcoming reality show, My Super Sweet World Class.

In 2012 keep your eyes and ears peeled for his feature on MTV, airing in 100+ countries worldwide, two new releases throughthelegendary,Stonebridge’slabel,Stoneyboy, includingacollaborationwithSarahMcLeod (The Real Thing) which features an amazing music video, a new track ‘Sunshine (Majorca)’ out through Central Station Records and a national and international tour in the works.

Keep your specs on, and watch closely, because I Am Sam is only just warming up!

Interview with I Am Sam

What made you want to be a DJ?

I grew up around music. My sister was a vocalist and my older brother was a DJ. I would sneak into his room when he was out and hop on the 1200’s when I was 8 and never looked back!

What do you do in your spare time?

Sleep! Haha! Late nights and early mornings in the studio take its toll so I love my sleep! When I’m not sleeping, there is nothing better than a good movie at the cinemas.

Who inspires you as a DJ/producer?

There are few that do. Swedish House Mafia brings so much energy to the stage! Also, after watching the David Guetta documentary I have a new found respect for him. He is a music professional, family man and all round entertainer.

WHAT’S ONE OF THE FUNNYEST THINGS YOU HAVE SEEN FROM BEHIND THE DECKS?

It was actually a few weeks back. Picture girls fight on the dancefloor… A girl takes a swing, trips over her dress and falls face first. The girl she was fighting trips and falls on top of her and a girl walking past trips over the both of them! Security falls over them… It was like a stacks on in the middle of the dance floor.

What tracks do you love playing at the moment?

I really love Avicii’s sound at the moment. Levels & Fade Into Darkness is definitely one of my favorites, as well as Fedde Le Grand’s mix of Paradise by Coldplay.

WHAT CAN YOU REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR FIRST GIG?

What DON’T I remember! Debut set at a club and decided to press stop on the wrong CD player while the manager was standing over my shoulder. I hadn’t even played a song yet! It just taught me, persistence and hard work pays off.

WHATS THE WORST BOOTLEG YOU CAN REMEMBER HEARING?

Geez there are so many, I wouldn’t know where to start! The endless list of Michael Jackson bootlegs when he past away were at the top of the list. You cant better an original Michael Jackson track.

What is your most memorable moment?

Playing to 6000 people at Luna Park was mental! There is nothing like seeing a sea of hands in the air when you drop a killer track. In terms of production, it was my first feature in the ARIA club charts and my first record deal with an international label. But in saying that, every gig is a memorable one, one way or another.

If you could DJ anywhere, where would it be?

Main stage, Tomorrowland Festival in Belguim , playing to 30,000+ people or club wise Pacha, Ibiza.
